INTERFACES Department

The department is composed of physical chemists whose fundamental domain of expertise is the reactivity of solid/gas, solid/liquid and solid/solid interfaces. The research focuses on the adsorption, transport and electrochemical processes as well as on the dissolution, nucleation/growth and solidification mechanisms.
Methods
The physical chemistry of interfaces is studied by coupling experiments and simulations at all scales. More specifically, a combination of macroscopic techniques such as adsorption measurements, spectroscopy (IR, X-ray adsorption), calorimetry, rheometry and chemical analysis of solutions with local characterizations such as surface analysis techniques (XPS, AES, surface-EXAFS), in situ monitoring (pH or current electrochemical microsensors), micro-Raman spectroscopy, imaging techniques from micro to atomic scales (microwave microscopy, AFM, SEM, STM and TEM) as well as neutron and X-ray scattering techniques (PDF, SANS, SAXS, WAXS) can be used. Regarding simulation techniques, the diversity of approaches (ab-initio, Molecular Dynamics, Monte Carlo, FEM) available enables real multi-scale studies.
Application fields
The continuously developed knowledge and control of the physical chemistry properties of interfaces is valorized in various fields of applications: waste management, coating elaboration, cement reactivity, aqueous corrosion, reactivity under micro-wave field and micro-wave based detectors.
