Abstract: Colloidal quantum dot (CQD) films and optical metamaterials
are two well-known classes of artificial matter. Although they have been developed by different communities and for very different purposes, they both share the same distinct feature that their behavior is not solely defined by their chemical composition, but also largely by their inner geometry. As a result, they typically display a wider range of properties than naturally occurring substances. In this presentation, I will show that combining CQD films and optical metamaterials presents interesting opportunities for optoelectronic applications. I will demonstrate these ideas by introducing the concept of structural electroluminescence and discuss the potential of these findings for LEDs and other devices.
