Christian CODDET was awarded a PhD degree by the University of Grenoble in 1973 and he started his academic career as a lecturer in this University the same year. Then he moved to the Technological University of Compiegne in 1975 and in 1984 to the University of Reims where he was appointed full professor. From 1982 to 1985 he also worked as a part time officer at the National Agency for Valuation of Research (ANVAR-OSEO).

During this first part of his career, his research work was devoted mainly to high temperature corrosion of metals and alloys, a domain to which he brought several innovations such as the use of acoustic emission to study the mechanical behaviour of oxide scales at high temperature. At this time, he was often invited to participate in the Gordon Conferences on corrosion in New Hampshire, USA. He already developed a strong partnership with industry, particularly in the sectors of turbines and metal alloys processing (steel, titanium, aluminium).

In 1986 he was recruited by the newly born University of Technology of Belfort Montbeliard (UTBM), following the request of the local industry, to set up a laboratory devoted to the development of coatings. Research activities were focused on dry surface engineering processes, namely thermal spray and physical vapor deposition with capabilities of process modelling, characterization of properties and performances of developed coatings, study and manufacturing of the precursor materials (powders), development of novel surface pre or post treatments (surface preparation by lasers, control of thermal flows and surface states by pre-heating or cryogenic cooling, etc...), and of course the development of applications, in close collaboration with industry, mainly in the sectors of energy and transportation. This laboratory, the LERMPS, is nowadays one of the best equipped Thermal Spray (TS) laboratory in the world incorporating most of advanced TS equipment (2 LPPS, 2 HVOF, 4 APS, 3 CS, 3 WAS, DPV2000, plume Spector …). Among the regular industrial partners of the lab. one can cite: SAFRAN, Thales, General Electric, Schneider Electric, Alstom, Peugeot, Renault, …). A number of foreign companies such as Daimler-Benz, Kanthal, Sonelgaz, US Air Force, Advanced Coatings, … also signed contracts with the lab accounting for more than 10% of its yearly revenues. Christian CODDET is also in this domain at the origin of several innovations such as the in situ surface preparation by lasers and the use of natural gas for the HVOF process.

From the beginning of the 90’s, research activity was also oriented towards additive manufacturing using thermal spray and particularly cold spray but also layer by layer techniques such as selective laser melting with a strong partnership with the Realizer and Renishaw companies. In this sector the LERMPS laboratory is actually the main industrial support of industry in France for the supply of specialty powders. It is also at the forefront of Additive Manufacturing for Aluminum base alloys.

Christian CODDET has been the supervisor of more than 50 PhD theses and is the author or co-author of 21 granted patents (most if time owned by the industrial partner) and more than 500 scientific papers published in international journals (RG score >46; h index >40).

Since 2009 he is also an adjunct professor of the Xi’an Jiaotong University in China, teaching the master course of additive manufacturing. In 2015 he entered the ASM (American Society for metals) Thermal Spray hall of fame and in 2016 he was appointed as visiting professor of the Guangdong Institute of New Materials.
