Philippe Grelu graduated from Ecole Centrale de Paris in 1989. After receiving a Ph.D. at University of Orsay (Paris XI) in quantum optics (1996), his interest moved to ultrafast nonlinear optics and mode-locked fiber lasers. He joined Université de Bourgogne in 1997 as associate professor, obtained his Habilitation in 2004 and became full professor in 2005. He developed a key expertise in nonlinear optical cavity dynamics, with major contributions in the fast-developing field of dissipative solitons.

Current research areas

  • Nonlinear optical cavity dynamics
  • Mode-locked fiber lasers
  • Dissipative solitons
  • Extreme and rogue waves
  • Programmable photonics
  • Microfiber optics and nanophotonics

Main funded national and international projects (principal investigator)

  •  ANR I-SITE Project APPEAR_BFC, Photonics at ICB and FEMTO-ST (2020-2022, 500 k€). With M. Jacquot, FEMTO-ST.
  • CEFIPRA/IFCPAR Project 5104-2, Self-similar optical patterns in nonlinear media, with K. Porsezian, Pondicherry University (2014-2018, ~110 k€).
